What is a QME?
What is a QME? Qualified medical evaluator (QME) is an independent physician certified by the DWC Medical Unit to perform medical evaluations. To become a QME, the doctor must pass a state written examination to demonstrate competency in the basic rules and regulations of California’s Workers’ Compensation system. Upon completion of this test, the doctor is certified to conduct independent evaluations to help injured workers and insurance carriers answer questions that might be delaying the claim. Claims adjusters, or injured workers, may request a QME exam for the purpose of a second medical opinion. Often times, the QME’s opinion will be the sole factor regarding compensability of a claimed work related injury. Many settlements are often based on QME reports.
