Membership & Occupation Related Discounts on Auto Insurance

If you’ve held auto insurance for even a short time, you probably already know there are several factors that determine how much you’ll pay in premium.  For instance, your age and driving experience have a big impact as well as the kind of car you own and how many miles you typically drive annually.  But, how many of you are aware that your occupation and/or professional associations may help you save money on auto insurance?

There are many occupations which have been deemed “lower-risk” by auto insurance companies, simply because the number of occurrences (i.e. tickets and accidents) is statistically lower within specific professions.  Over time, studies have shown that engineers and scientists, for example, tend to be less risky to insure than drivers in other professions.

In addition to engineers and scientists, occupations that often qualify for lower rates are doctors, nurses, teachers, accountants and veterinarians among others.  In some cases, you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance simply because you hold a degree in an approved field of study – even if you aren’t employed within that field.  There are insurance companies that offer discounts for being a member of an organization such as AARP, CA Farm Bureau or the American Kennel Club.  The key is to talk to your insurance professional about your occupation and any professional organizations or clubs that you belong to.  That way, your agent will not only offer you the best coverage, but make sure you get the best rate!
